Energy-saving ideas

IPORAC AND VALDEZ. Promote information campaign that teaches consumers to use electricity efficiently and responsibly.

It’s quite surprising to know that, while electricity rates have been fluctuating due to a confluence of uncontrollable factors, Filipino households don’t seem to care much about the manner in which they use electricity. Unlike their counterparts in the business sector, residential consumers are relatively carefree in their energy use.

At the recent Bulong Pulungan at Sofitel, which had Manila Electric Company (Meralco) vice president Tony Valdez and customer solutions manager Alfred Iporac as guests, I learned more about the company’s Bright Ideas information campaign, which teaches consumers to use electricity more efficiently and responsibly: The use of LED TV, as compared to an ordinary 24-inch model, costs only P0.30 per hour, instead of P1 per hour.

You can also consume less power by reducing the brightness of the screen and unplugging your TV, DVD and stereo units when you’re not using them.  It was shocking to learn that leaving a Blu Ray Home Theater Player on for a day costs around P150!

Where do we find Meralco’s Bright Ideas? Look for them in your electricity bills, or visit www.meralco.com.ph/brightideas.
