Gary Valenciano and my mom (Inday Badiday) have the same birth anniversary (Aug. 6). I will never forget the time he and his wife Angeli prayed over my mom, who was very sick. I also remember fondly when my dalagay, IC Mendoza, and I hitched a ride with him after his concert. Gary was behind the wheel and he jested, “Saan po tayo, ma’am?”
Those are but two of my Gary V memories. For sure, every Pinoy has a Gary V song to go with every memorable moment in their lives.
After countless hits, Mr. Pure Energy marks his 30th anniversary with a concert, “Arise: Gary V 3.0,” April 11 and 12, 8 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum (call 9115555). Please bring donations for “Yolanda” survivors. There will be booths for Shining Light Foundation and Unicef’s Operation Blessing.
As Michael Jackson’s No. 1 fan, I say the “MJ of the Philippines” title belongs to Gary V. Get set for Mr. Pure Energy reenergized, as we pay homage and thank him for the music.
After three decades, what surprises do you still have in store?
One thing I can promise is that the show will be a journey of surprises.
What are your rituals before a show?
I spend time alone…with my God. I listen to music that’s not connected to the concert.
In what ways are you different from fellow singers Martin Nievera and Ogie Alcasid?
We have different backgrounds and different childhood stories. That’s why we express ourselves through music differently, too.
In what way has your rivalry with Martin challenged you all these years?
As a young artist, I felt challenged because he always knew how to communicate with his audience in an effective and entertaining way. He has taught me a lot as a host, singer and friend, more than as a “rival.”
Are good singers born, not made?
There are many good singers, but not every singer is an artist.
