The downside of social media

FABIE. Pinoy performers need not seek greener pastures abroad.

Kristina Vitug, Twitter follower: “I have been comparing actors’ tweets on the Internet, but I’m more amazed and amused at readers’ reactions to what they share. Bashers and hecklers’ comments can be cruel and humiliating. Many of their comments verge on indecency, vulgarity and obscenity. This is the downside of social media. Whatever happened to good manners?”

Other notes:

Meanne Mijares, events planner: “The Piolo Pascual-Toni Gonzaga starrer, ‘Starting Over Again,’ is no doubt a box-office blockbuster. But, its references to the Virgin Mary didn’t amuse me. I believe that the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary should not be used mockingly, jokingly, angrily or in any other irreverent manner. I hope scriptwriters refrain from using the names of God, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints in vain.”

Caustic remark

CONCEPCION. Unbiased choice.

Celine Fabie, singer and musical-theater actress: “After our ‘Manila Vanilla’ shows, I often hear viewers telling us, ‘You guys sing so well—you should be on Broadway!’ Once, this was followed by a caustic remark: ‘What are you doing here?’ —Well, we live here!

“If only more people would support Filipino performers within the boundaries of our own country, they wouldn’t have to seek greener pastures abroad to earn a decent living. Let the audience come over and see us for a change! The country should learn to capitalize on Filipino talent for tourism as much as it draws attention to our white-sand beaches.”

Ace Lennon Babasa, nurse: “The PMPC has made an unbiased choice with KC Concepcion as its Best Actress for ‘Boy Golden,’ where she completely transformed herself into her character. She was riveting and fabulous in it!”
