Martin, Regine just have friendly fun onstage

MARTIN Nievera and Regine Velasquez

Martin Nievera and Regine Velasquez talk, joke and laugh a lot about each other’s love life—and it’s infectious. Even when completing each other’s sentences, they’re sure to end the exchanges with a chuckle, a snort, or a full-on guffaw.

Although the two singers don’t have a romantic past, they can almost pass off as a couple when they’re singing onstage. “The secret is not thinking whether or not we have rapport,” Martin pointed out, laughing. “It’s that simple. We don’t have a past, or feelings for each other! We naturally just have fun.”

For Regine, working with a good friend like Martin dispels all awkwardness. “I don’t get conscious; I don’t get shy when I have to look into his eyes.”

The duo headlined a musical event, “Voices: The 2003 World Concert Tour,” over a decade ago. It was toured around the United States and Canada after a successful local run. On Feb. 14, Martin and Regine will reunite for Star Media Entertainment’s “Voices of Love” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Excerpts from our interview:

So you two never fell for each other?

Martin: Regine’s more like a sister to me. Plus, she has a height requirement which I didn’t meet! But we’re very close.

Regine: Crush ko si Martin before, but I saw him more as a mentor and idol. He was the first guy to call me “Regine” and I think he’s the first big star I sang with. He gave me that chance even though I was just new.

What’s it like performing together?

Martin: Regine makes me want to do better. If you’re singing with her, you’d better be good and in top vocal shape!

Regine: Exciting, because we usually take on challenging pieces. He may not know this, but I’ve learned a lot of valuable singing techniques from him.

What would you say is your signature song or duet?

Regine: “Forever.” But before that it was a mashup of “Used to Be” and “Imagine.”

Martin: “You Are My Song” is special to us. We didn’t record it together, but our respective versions both hit No. 1 in the charts.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Martin: I’ve never had dates on the day because of work! Pops (Fernandez) and I never had a Valentine’s Day that wasn’t shared with at least 15,000 people!

Regine: Ogie (Alcasid) and I usually have some celebration before or after Feb. 14. It’s the price we have to pay as artists, but we love what we do.

Aside from talent, what do you admire most about each other?

Martin: She’s my favorite singer. And the person she has become is a perfect role model for every artist who wants to become a big star in this industry.

Regine: He’s very generous. He’s always there to support us during our concerts. When new artists invite me to their shows, I go without hesitation. Kung isang kanta lang naman, I’ll do it for free. That’s what I’ve learned from Martin—sharing your talent.
