Arthur Cairel, OFW: “As a Coco Martin follower, I’m glad that he is going back to his indie roots via ‘Padre de Familia,’ his movie with Nora Aunor. He’s also reported to be bankrolling the project. Here’s hoping that the movie will both be a box-office and critical success.”
Other notes:
Kathlyn Sta. Maria, televiewer: “I find the Korean drama series, ‘When a Man Falls in Love,’ rather disturbing, because it might lead viewers to confuse coercion with unselfish devotion. In it, the male lead repeatedly reduces his love interest to tears with cruel words by dismissing her interests and goals, willfully disregards her personal boundaries despite her discomfort, and exerts unrelenting pressure on her to marry him!
“Instead of portraying such behavior as unhealthy, the storyline often takes the man’s side and makes the female lead look like an ingrate for not reciprocating his feelings and being attracted to another man. Isn’t true love supposed to come with no strings attached?”
Gel Lagman, student: “I am a huge fan of animated films. I’m aware that a good number of Hollywood features involve Filipino animators. I’m wondering why there hasn’t been any followup after ‘RPG Metanoia.’ If we’re such great animators, why can’t we produce our own original animated movies?”
Thought
Leo Domingo, teacher: “Why does the voice of Karen Davila always end in an up tone when reading the news? I get confused as to when her sentences would end. I expect a down tone to suggest that the sentence’s thought is already complete—hence, I prepare myself for another sentence related to what she’s reporting.”
Kitch Mallari, televiewer: “I am for Hollywood films being dubbed in Filipino, so local viewers can easily understand them. But, can their translators make sure that the Tagalog words they use make sense? I had a hard time figuring out what the following meant: Actor One: ‘Kumusta d’yan?’ Actor Two: ‘Parang buhay, kung anu-anong challenges ang binibigay.’ This takes place while the characters are detonating a bomb! Huh?”
