NEW YORK—The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has awarded $3 million in grants to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to work with the Nepal government in protecting the tiger population in that Himalayan kingdom.

In a statement Wednesday, DiCaprio, 39, a WWF board member, said he was “hopeful” the money would help “exceed the goal” of doubling the tiger population by 2022, Chinese Year of the Tiger.

The money will help build up antipoaching patrols and protect and restore areas for tigers to breed.  AP
