Too many hidden messages…
“Wrecking Ball” is the second single from “Bangerz,” the latest studio-release from Miley Cyrus. Indeed, Miley Cyrus isn’t done with the controversies she has started. When you think of it, how apt that her latest single to be released into the market is entitled “Wrecking Ball” because in more ways than one, she has become it in the music industry.
Now, to the music itself. While the lyrics in Wrecking Ball show some clear signs of a sincerity about them, they reflect her personal struggles with the abrupt end of her engagement to Liam Hemsworth after her 2013 MTV VMA’s fiasco. In those lines, she still appears emotionally vulnerable and unprepared for all the “setbacks” in her young career! It definitely helped that she was one of the handful of writers who helped pen this song because it lent some truth and credibility to it. The song connected some aspects of her personal life and her professional career.
In terms of the production value of Wrecking Ball, it is comparatively weaker compared to some of her previous works. The track itself sounds more like your everyday standard pop song that you would hear being played in the radio. Just some added info, though. One of the two producers for this said single is Dr. Luke who also happens to be one of the producers for Katy Perry’s latest album “Prism.” Could it be that the making of Wrecking Ball was made only during the spare time of producer Dr. Luke? I just think that the track needed a little more polishing to emphasize on the improving vocal work Miley Cyrus has shown as of late.
Now, to the music video. This is an entirely different matter because it is just so inappropriate for young viewers, especially her pre-teen fans. Why? Miley Cyrus spends more than half of the time barely clothed and the way she was riding the wrecking ball and kissing the sledgehammer is really suggestive in nature and carries with it a lot of double meanings. There are just too many hidden messages in the Wrecking Ball music video. As a viewer at home, you can’t but help ask yourself: “What kind of message is Miley Cyrus specifically trying to send to her young viewers?”
The music video of Wrecking Ball is a perfect example of the “over-sexualized” image pop artists like Miley Cyrus have gone through. It is so excessive and the line between decency and immorality has been crossed already! After watching the music video just one time in its entirety, I decided it would be better to not watch it anymore. There is no point in rewarding bad behavior with more views! I am not even sure if this can even be called a music video now! I wonder what concepts the director of this music video had been rolling in his mind in the first place?
Whether longtime fans of Miley Cyrus are pleased with her career direction and public image now, it is really up to them to decide for themselves if they still want to support her or not. In defense of her, though, some have raised the argument that she is just expressing her artistic tendencies and that she is just doing all of these things for the sake of so-called “art.” However, anyway you look at Miley Cyrus now, most of us would never have thought she would be capable of doing stuff like this! She definitely did more than surprise her fans! For better or worse, this is the Miley Cyrus the music industry has now and the artist who some can say they had a hand in creating!
