Forbes: Pacquiao among world’s 100 most powerful celebrities

Forbes top 10MANILA, Philippines—Boxing superstar Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao has remained among the world’s 100 most powerful celebrities, joining the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, and LeBron James, according to Forbes 14th annual Celebrity 100 list.

But the re-elected Saranggani representative’s 78th ranking is a big slide from his 33rd place in 2012.

Oprah Winfrey, meanwhile, regains her No. 1 spot after placing second for two consecutive years. Lady Gaga is No. 2.

Pacquiao, who suffered a brutal one-punch knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8, is ahead of internationally-renowned author J.K. Rowling of the Harry Potter series (82nd) and fellow boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. (88th).

He trails behind film director and writer Christopher Nolan (76th), who directed The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception, author Stephen King (75th), and actress Gwyneth Paltrow (71st), who starred in the Iron Man movies series.

In terms of money, Pacquiao ranks 57th for his $34 million estimated total gross income from June 1 last year up to this year. He is tied at 57 with Mayweather.

In terms of media exposure, Pacquiao places 82nd in TV/Radio rank and 81st in Press ranking. He trails behind host Ryan Seacrest at 71 and actress Sandra Bullock at 75 in the Press ranking.

Pacquiao is tied at 60 with singer Rihanna, champion runner Usain Bolt, and actor Charlie Sheen in the Marketability rankings. The marketability rank “is a measure of how desirable each celebrity is to marketers,” according to Forbes.

In terms of the Social ranking, Pacquiao (56th) ranks higher than business mogul Donal Trump (59th), musician Jay-Z (66th), and actor Robert Downey Jr. who starred in the Iron Man movie series.

“Each star’s number [in the social ranking] is a reflection of how popular he or she is on the Internet,” Forbes said.

Oprah, the queen of entertainment, is back on top after placing second for two consecutive years. Lady Gaga (No. 2), with her massive social media presence, moved up from the fifth spot last year, followed by director Steven Spielberg (No. 3) and Beyoncé (No. 4). Madonna (No. 5) is a returnee to the list, rounding out the top five.

Musicians dominate the Top Ten in 2013. Country superstar Toby Keith (No. 43), featured on the cover (Cowboy Capitalist, p. 74) has some of the most loyal fans in music, and owns enough product extensions to make sure they’re also some of the most lucrative.

Notable newcomers to the 2013 list include Hugh Jackman (No. 11); Channing Tatum (No. 23); Jennifer Lawrence (No. 49); Emma Stone (No. 84); Mila Kunis (No. 89) and Amy Poehler (No. 92). Athletes Usain Bolt (No. 48); Drew Brees (No. 50) and Danica Patrick (No. 91) join fellow newcomers Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. (Erika) James (No. 42); model Miranda Kerr (No. 100) and TV host Sean Hannity (No. 72).

Among the drop-offs this year are Adele, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Johnny Depp, Alex Rodriguez, Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon and Elton John.

The Celebrity 100 measures money and fame, which includes estimated earnings over the last 12 months, and how often each celebrity is mentioned in print and on TV.

This year, Starcount measured social networking strength across 11 social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google+. Also new this year is a marketability measure provided by E-Poll, a score that determines how desirable each celebrity is to marketers.

Earnings consist of pre-tax income between June 1, 2012 and June 1, 2013. Management, agent and attorney fees are not deducted.
