As a starmaking vehicle, “Must Be … Love” succeeds in shining up the separate and joint careers of its young leads, Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. Their new love team is now the hottest TV-film ticket in town, especially with the tweens and teens who dominate the ranks of local moviegoers.
Time was when love teams ruled over the local movie scene—Guy and Pip, Vi and Bot, Gabby and Sharon, Maricel and William, Snooky and Albert—you know the drill. For some years now, however, movie tandems have been eclipsed in popularity by the film production slump and the teleserye craze, or they’ve held sway mainly on TV.

“Must be Love,” the splashy big-screen launch of Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo as a romantic tandem, has a pay-off worthy of its carefully calibrated setup. It follows the story of tomboy Patchot Espinosa (Bernardo) and her bosom buddy, Ivan Lacson (Padilla), who realize—but refuse to acknowledge—that there’s more to their relationship than friendship.
