Last year’s viral juggernaut, “Gangnam Style,” helped introduce Korea’s infectious brand of pop music, dubbed “K-pop,” to the western world. For many, the hip-hop influenced song represented a brand new musical experience. However, the relationship between hip-hop and K-pop isn’t all that new.

On the BBC channel last month, we caught an instructive and cautionary documentary about the formation and training of a new “K-Pop” singing group. The docu informed viewers that Korean musical performances have become big business, grossing almost $200 billion a year!

The MBLAQ’s “First Contact” concert in Manila scheduled for Sunday night at Aliw Center has been moved to April 1, 2013 at 7 p.m., the promoters of the group announced.

Things are beginning to heat up as summer approaches—and we’re not just talking about the weather. Psy has had his time with “Gangnam Style,” especially after it toppled Justin Bieber’s “Baby” early this month as YouTube’s most watched video— with more than 1.4 billion views!

“Seoul Invasion,” the K-pop concert set yesterday (Saturday) at the Aliw Theater has been moved to March 22. The promoters, CNI Productions, are finalizing negotiations for another group to join the concert. All purchased tickets will be honored on the new date. In the past there have been numerous movements representing different cultures and countries of origin. For instance, there was the “Brit-pop movement” in the early 90′s with bands like Blur and Oasis leading the charge. Then in the late 90′s to early 2000′s, we had the “Latin movement” best represented by artists like Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony.
