THE AUTHOR with (from left): Telly Leung, George Takei and Paul Nakauchi in “Allegiance” photo: ALLEGIANCEMUSICAL.COM

I sincerely hope you haven’t grown tired of my stories about the Broadway-bound musical “Allegiance.” We have just begun our third week of rehearsal, and we are all mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted. All that said, our hearts are full, knowing only too well the importance of telling this rarely told chapter of American history.

There’s more to beauty than sheer physical perfection

By
GWYNETH Paltrow at Apple Store Soho in New York City AFP

Poor Gwyneth Paltrow. There she was, minding her own business, occasionally starring in films like “Iron Man 3” while living the good life with her husband and children. Then, all of a sudden, People magazine chose her as its most beautiful woman of the world for 2013—and a flurry of dissenting opinions hit the fan!

Factors hurting ‘American Idol’

By
'American Idol' logo

Not since you had the producers decide to bring together such an eclectic group of personalities and artists who are polar opposites of each other that you knew tensions would quickly rise and give way to some on-air drama. Who knew that there was legitimate “heat” between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj? It was puzzling at first since there was no reported “beef” between the two prior to their joining the judging panel. Apparently, almost nobody knew the reality of the situation until it was out there for everybody to see and to have more than an earful of!

Celebs’ advice to colleagues in politics

By
LORNA Tolentino: Do the best you can.

Part 2   Yesterday was D-Day for show biz colleagues who had decided to join the political arena. Since they are usually the object of envy of other politicos due to their popularity, they have to try harder to prove that their credentials go beyond box-office success and award-winning performances. They already have money to [...]

When stars play famous people

By
ECHO Rosales (left) doing a more believable job portraying the much-loved Jesse Robredo than Piolo Pascual personifying Ninoy Aquino

Amazingly apt and believable portrayals like Meryl Streep’s spot-on screen personifications of Margaret Thatcher and Julia Child should convince other actors that, when they play famous people, they should try really hard to at least look the part.

Ate Luds’ show biz anecdotes

By
INDAY Badiday danny cinco

Although Mother’s Day is over, I still want to pay tribute to my late great mom, Inday Badiday (or Ate Luds). Shouldn’t we honor our moms every single day and not just on a single day in May? Many of her fans have been prodding me to write a book about my SuperwoMOM.

“I don’t know why it hasn’t been told,” actor-director Diego Luna said of Cesar Chavez who, along with Filipino and Mexican migrant workers, organized the first successful farm workers union in American history. “AMERICAN Idol” contestant Amber Holcomb runs through “My Funny Valentine” in front of guest mentor Harry Connick Jr. photo:fox/http://au.ibtimes.com

I haven’t been watching too much TV (not the singing competitions in particular, save for a few episodes of “The Voice” for my research and strategy development), so I have little idea of what’s been going on. However, one article posted on nextavenue.org about guest mentor Harry Connick Jr. and his recent stint on the [...]

‘Blind casting’ format catches on

CULINARY icons Anthony Bourdain and Nigella Lawson of “The Taste”

The new cooking challenge, “The Taste,” is particularly interesting and instructive: Not only does it top-bill big culinary icons like Anthony Bourdain and the lovely Nigella Lawson but it also takes its cue from another TV show, “The Voice,” but smartly adjusts its musical format to fit a new cooking challenge context.   Like “The [...]
