Harana King bids farewell

MANG Felipe Alonzo was “a kind man with a golden voice.”

Yet another “Harana King” has taken his final bow. Tricycle driver/master haranista Felipe Alonzo died in Vigan on Sunday. He was 78. Alonzo was featured in Benito Bautista’s acclaimed documentary “Harana.” In his Facebook page, Bautista described “Mang Felipe [as] a kind and humble man with a golden voice.” Before his passing, Alonzo left “a wealth of Ilocano harana songs” as immortalized in the docu and resulting recordings. In September, farmer Celestino Aniel passed on, leaving fisherman Romeo Bergunio to continue the trio’s legacy. Bayani San Diego Jr.
