MANILA, Philippines — Legislators on Thursday said that Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon deserved more than the first runner-up spot in the Miss Universe pageant.

“She totally deserved to win. She nailed the final question and she’s the most beautiful,” said Marikina City Representative Miro Quimbo who also asked “why do we always fall short?”

This was echoed by Cibac Partylist Representative Sherwin Tugna who said he was sad that Tugonon won first runner-up when she should have won more. “Nevertheless, we are so proud of her. She exemplifies the Filipina beauty and intelligence.”

Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo Angara said that what Tugonon showed during the pageant was that “Pinays are not just pretty but also smart and witty.”

“She is the latest in a string of beautiful and bright Pinays to make us proud,” he said.

She is right when she said there is no formula in winning the Miss U contest and it’s like fate or destiny. Watching the pageant on TV from the very beginning I really thought she will be the winner, and when she and Ms. USA were standing there waiting for the announcement I
prayed very hard that Ms. Philippines wins.Let’s look at the side of the Ms. USA for a change.
She was a high school graduate from a Catholic school here in the US, of course, who rented
a dress for $20.00 (with a hole on it) to wear in the Miss Rhode Island Beauty Pageant to win,
then to Miss USA. Our culture won’t allow us to borrow or rent a dress for special occasion
like this. We would buy a new one no matter what it takes. Praying, fate, destiny, hard work,
talents, probably justification rolled into one, those are the formula for winning.

Few of our kababayans are quick to breathe fire without analyzing attending facts before verbally assaulting those they think have infected their egos. Take the case of last year’s Miss China who won the Ms. International pageant held in China.  Ms. China was not only extremely pretty, she is also a graduate of Oxford University in U.K. with a PhD. garnering many accolades and awards during her stint in the famous world renown university.  Now, that’s what I call beauty and brains.

Just hope this will stop other celebrities like Lucy Liu from feeling
slighted when she recoils from “looking Filipina” if she sunbathes
too much and gets dark-skinned pangit dahil maitim.

Dark-skinned and Filipina can be so lovely as Janine amply shows
    for all to see.

Lucy Liu is uglier than the hole in the áss.
