MANILA, Philippines—Veteran actor-comedian Rodolfo “Dolphy” Quizon could have been given the National Artist Award in 2009, had it not been for the disapproval of Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, said former National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) executive director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez in a radio interview Thursday afternoon.

“He (Dolphy) passed the first phase of deliberation and we were happy about it but during the second stage, a powerful member of the selection committee who was a former president of the CCP (Cultural Center of the Philippines) opposed his nomination,” said Guidote-Alvarez, who was initially hesitant to name the person she was referring to.

Pressed for answer by “Dos por Dos” host Anthony Taberna, Guidote-Alvarez dropped the name of Tiongson.

Guidote-Alvarez said Tiongson  “opposed violently, doing a passionate speech on his disapproval naming Dolphy as a National Artist because of his general portrayal of gays in his films.”

She said Tiongson also questioned Dolphy’s body of work.

Tiongson was vice-president and artistic director of the CCP in the late 1980s to mid 1990s. He also served as chairman of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. He is also a noted critic, author and academician.

Guidote-Alvarez said she was compelled to speak about the matter because of earlier reports saying she grabbed the award from Dolphy.  She was named National Artist for Theater in 2009 in a controversial decision by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.  The case is still pending in the Supreme Court.

Guidote-Alvarez is recognized as founder of the Philippine Educational Theater Association, an issue that Tiongson also opposed in the past, saying it was the late Lino Brocka who founded PETA.

Hopefully, Tiongson will change his mind.

He has his own reason why he denied the nomination. And he has standards to follow to keep a certain culture.

It is kind of sad that there has been a DISCONNECTION between Phillipine movies and Philippine arts as a culture. Movies had been on its own disregarding promotion of Philippine culture, Philippine arts, Philippine heritage and Philippine traditions, plus moral values.

Tiongson was voted as the Executice Director of NCCA because of his overall views about the arts and culture. And he should be powerful enough to express what he thinks is right.

Next time, choose those leaders in any organization or government offices whom you think will best suit your needs and views for now and in the future.

This will determine the course of the future. Take this Dolphy’s case as an example.

Mr. Dolphy, may you rest in peace.

THIS ARTICLE NEEDS MORE RESEARCH. It’s very unfair for Dr. Tiongson.

Common Filipinos are known to be bakya moviegoers, but that is our movie culture similar to Bollywood in India. Tiongson would really oppose the award to Dolphy as his ideas are far and alien to the Bakya culture. Simply put Tiongson is an elitist and thinks mainstream Filipino film is not art. Maybe the independent experimental homo themed films are more of his type.

Instead of adversely reacting, why don’t you guys examine the content of the news story first.

The article is simply biased because there was no attempt or whatsoever on the writer’s part to interview Dr. Tiongson and get his side of the issue.  Why was there no fact-checking and verification? Did the writer just watched a TV program and jotted down notes then conjured a story out of that scribbles?

Accuracy. Truthfulness. Responsibility. I cannot find these canons in the article above.

Read the article and ask questions. Be media literate.

I almost forgot, we are on the internet and we can be anything we want, it’s just surprising that many people choose to be stupid…and I can see them with their comments.

vox populi vox dei, one opinion of an (who called themselves expert) against the will of the majority, is a no question!! give Dolphy what he deserves based on public opinion. Dolphy refined his craft not for the consumption of this (people who called themselves artist and expert) but for the masses, and the masses speak out!!!
