To divorce or not – the stars weigh in
To divorce or not to divorce? That is the question! Since my own marriage has been annulled many heartaches (and pesos) ago, needless to say I am in favor of the Divorce Bill.
Love can sometimes be war. But what may work for me may not work for others. It’s really on a case-to-case basis. We just have to be ready to pay the price for the life we choose, whether it is staying married or reclaiming our freedom. It’s not my intention to send the wrong signals but, based on my experience, it’s better to cut clean than to play dirty on the side. The infidelity rate these days seems to be as erratic as the dollar exchange rate. In the long run, it’s the kids who will suffer if their parents stay together just for appearances.
We can never divorce ourselves from our kids. Our children will become better persons if we were happier parents. Why force (it)? Just divorce! Life is too short to spend too long with the wrong partner.
GLORIA DIAZ: I am very much in favor, because it protects women. When there is divorce, both partners will be more responsible about making the marriage work; otherwise there will be legal consequences.
DINGDONG DANTES: Divorce will just give couples an easy way out of something that’s meant to be for keeps; so I am not for it.
AMY PEREZ: I am in favor of it. That’s the only thing I need now, after 13 years of no support [from] my ex-husband. It’s unfair not to be given a chance to have a happy marriage. Matagal na kaming walang contact, and he was the one who quit. We’ve been looking for him. The best way to deal with men like him is through divorce.
DIREK JOEY REYES: I am very much in favor of divorce. There are options like annulment and legal separation, but these processes seem reserved for those who can afford to correct mistakes in judgments of the heart. But with proper scrutiny and justifiable reasons, why extend the suffering of the mismatched couple, just for the sake of social propriety and institutional hypocrisy?
PHOEMELA BARANDA: Maybe the reason I’m not yet married is because I believe marriage is sacred. I won’t get hitched unless I’m 100 percent sure about the man. I’m against divorce because I believe that once you’re married, there should be no easy way out.
ARA MINA: I believe that if two people don’t love each other, it’s pointless to torture themselves by staying together. So the solution is divorce. But I guess our country is not yet ready for that, since we’re very conservative. For sure the Church will work against it, too.
TINTIN BERSOLA-BABAO: Why stay in a marriage that makes you miserable? My parents separated after trying everything to save their marriage. They just were not compatible. They were both unhappy being together. They hurt each other emotionally, and hurt us kids, too, in the process.
DINGDONG AVANZADO: I’m against divorce because God hates it. But He made legal provisions for it because of the hardness of men’s hearts (permissive will). Congress should weigh the pros and cons very carefully. P-Noy is right in not rushing into a decision.

Manila is international pop star Miley Cyrus’ lone Asian stop on her ongoing “Gypsy Heart Tour.” She performs June 17 at the SM Mall of Asia open grounds. Miley has been an icon to fans who have loved her as “Hannah Montana.” She took on a more mature image for her album, “Can’t Be Tamed,” which debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums and No. 8 in the UK Album Charts.
