“I grew up with my lola,” she told the Inquirer. “And the thing with grandmothers is that they just love to spoil their grandchildren. Your mom or dad may not agree or give you everything you ask for, but your grandmother will. That’s why I love mine so much.

“When I was a kid, I remember not being allowed to eat sweets or chocolates, because they said it will [destroy] my teeth. But when no one was around, or when I was in my room, my lola would secretly give me some, and tell me to eat them quickly!
“That’s how things still are to this day. Whenever I go home to Cebu, there would always be lots of food. Even if my lola isn’t as strong as she once was, she still goes out of her way to cook.”—ALLAN POLICARPIO
