Liza Soberano asserts her being ‘full Filipino’ for her ‘Bagani’ role

Liza Soberano voiced out her thoughts on what it is to be Filipino based on criticisms about her not being Filipino enough for her “Bagani” character.
She wrote on a tweet, “And who says were not pinoy? My Father is full filipino. I was raised by two filipinos since the age of 4. I looooove sinigang i think thats as pinoy as pinoy can get.”

While some netizens poked fun at the grammatical errors in her tweet, others tried to diffuse the tension by calling out the nitpicking.

One commenter tried to explain that people are not questioning her being Filipino; rather, some people think she does not look Filipino enough because her American features are more dominant. The commenter also talked about the colonial mentality of fans.

Netizens have been criticizing the use of mestizo actors to play roles in “Bagani”. A tweet surfaced earlier which compared how Hollywood movie “Black Panther” employed actors of African descent while “Bagani” had “half-white” Asians covered with bronze makeup to portray pre-colonial Filipinos.

Netizen @MiguelPoblador however clarified that he was not criticizing the actors, but rather the people in power who made the casting decisions. JB
