A brand-new short film by anime director Hayao Miyazaki is scheduled to screen in Japan this March.

“Boro the Caterpillar” will begin showing on March 21 at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, which showcases the animated works of Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli and where the new 14-minute short will join a rotating schedule of screenings.

The museum’s website introduces Miyazaki’s new work as follows: “Just before dawn, Boro the Caterpillar hatched from an egg among patches of scrub grass. Looking around for the first time, he noticed the brilliance of the morning sun and a deliciousness in the air. Boro lowered himself down to the ground from the borogiku (groundsel), and stepped out into the world of caterpillars and caterpillars’ enemies.”

The 77-year-old director behind “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Spirited Away”, who announced his retirement in 2013, was already known to be back at work on a feature film. The completion of “Boro the Caterpillar”, however, while in the works for the past few years, came as a pleasant surprise to fans.

Tickets to attend the museum in March will go on sale next month. Find information about getting tickets in Japan and abroad at: www.ghibli-museum.jp/en/ticket-information. JB
