WATCH: 5 favorites for the 2018 Golden Globes
The 75th Golden Globe Awards will be held Sunday, Jan. 7 in Los Angeles. Hosted by presenter and comedian Seth Meyers, the ceremony will crown the best movies of 2017.
Here’s a look at five of the hot favorites likely to come away with prizes at this year’s event.
The Shape of Water
Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy movie is the ceremony’s major favorite with seven nominations. This love story, which already won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in September, is up for best drama movie, best director, best screenplay and best film score for the music by French composer Alexandre Desplat. Three of the movie’s actors — Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer — are also up for awards in different categories.

After “Schindler’s List” in 1994 and “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, Steven Spielberg could potentially do the double: winning best drama movie and and best director for the third time in his career. With six nominations, his film about journalists’ role in leaking the Pentagon Papers in the early 1970s could also bring a fourth award for Tom Hanks and a ninth for Meryl Streep.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The story of a mother who confronts the police on their inability to solve the murder of her daughter already shone at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Now, it looks set for Golden Globes success with six nominations. As well as being up for best drama movie, best director (Martin McDonagh), best screenplay and best film score; the movie’s actors Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell are also nominated for awards.
Lady Bird
Greta Gerwig’s first solo movie is one of the hottest contenders in the best musical or comedy movie category. The movie’s screenplay and the performances of lead stars Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf are also up for awards. “Lady Bird” has a total of four nominations.
I, Tonya
One of its key rivals is the biopic of figure skater Tonya Harding, which has three nominations, along with “All the Money in the World”, “Call Me By Your Name”, “Dunkirk” and “The Greatest Showman”. Like “Lady Bird”, the film’s two female stars, Margot Robbie and Allison Janney, are both up for awards. JB
