Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story

JOHN Regala: A revelation, says director Tikoy Aguiluz

(We are running this guide to help moviegoers plan their holiday cinema tour. The 37th MMFF runs from December 25 to January 7, 2012.)

Directed by Tikoy Aguiluz; stars Jeorge “ER” Ejercito, Carla Abellana, Phillip Salvador, John Regala, Baron Geisler, Ketchup Eusebio, Ping Medina, Yul Servo, Dennis Padilla, Roi Vinzons, Gerald Ejercito, Valerie Concepcion, Jaycee Parker, Amay Bisaya

Mobster Asiong Salonga (ER Ejercito) rules the mean streets of Manila with an iron fist—until he is betrayed by a trusted friend. Graded “A” by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB), the period flick had a budget of P75 million, relates lead actor Ejercito. “We shot it with Alexa, a top-of-the-line digital camera, and converted the footage to black-and-white,” he recalls. The production design team turned Pagsanjan, Laguna, into 1950s Tondo. Ejercito insists that the goal is not to be the festival box-office top-grosser. “Our objective is to make a quality film that we can proudly send to festivals abroad.” He is pleased with the high mark from the CEB. “It made us forget all the hardships and sleepless nights.”

What’s so fascinating about a dumb criminal to warrant several film remakes?

    • Anonymous

Maybe they (moviemaker) want to promote criminal activities in this country. Imagine, ipinangangalandakan sa buong mundo ang buhay ng isang sanggano!

      • Anonymous

Or maybe, they want to show that crime does not pay?  He did die at an early age of 27.

Another example of Filipino glorifying lawlessness and st upidity!!! And guess what!!!!! Even more Filipinos will patronize and see this movie…Very pathetic…..

Your grammar, spelling and punctuations are pathetic.

Why, didn’t hollywood has the same trick? Even pirates are made into a hero, mobsters casted as tough guys (scarface, godfather), evils as intelligent etc. You haven’t seen the movie so why judge early on how the storyline was delivered?

look seekleer nobody is glorifing anything. This film is basically a story of a guy who was able to control tondo. now i don’t know where you are from, but here in manila. tondo is the one of those place where you don’t look at people eye to eye cause you might not get home in one piece. “kung siga ka talaga dumayo ka ng tondo”

my point is SEEKLEER. to me this movie is interesting, its something new. and actually worth watching.

now is it us who is pathetic or is it you, who is narrow minded..think about it man

With its casting, it looks more like another “Lapu-Lapu” (remember, the Lito Lapid parody of the Cebuano heroe’s duel with Magellan)  ha ha ha.  But since it was helmed by Tikoy Aguilus, I’m crossing my fingers for now.
