WATCH: Benedict Cumberbatch plays Thomas Edison in ‘The Current War’

Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing the role of Thomas Edison, in a film set during the crucial time when a fight broke out on who will be lighting up America with electricity.

The trailer for the upcoming movie “The Current War” shows Cumberbatch as the American inventor Thomas Edison, fighting to prove that direct current, and not Nikola Tesla’s alternating current, is the way to bring electricity into every home in the United States.

It also shows the partnership between Edison and one of his financiers J.P. Morgan, as they went head-to-head with the Westinghouse Electric Company which supported Tesla’s theories during the late 1800s.

The movie is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon who worked on several episodes of the TV series “Glee” and “American Horror Stories”.

“The Current War” also stars Michael Shannon (“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) and Nicholas Hoult (“X-Men: First Class”).

No date has been announced for the movie’s premiere. JB
