No one forced actress-TV host KC Concepcion to do her tell-all on “The Buzz” on Sunday. The decision to announce her breakup with actor Piolo Pascual was hers alone, said Boy Abunda, who conducted the now controversial interview.

“She thought about it for a long time. She did it to express her pain, but not to the point of hurting other people,” Abunda told Inquirer Entertainment by phone on Monday. “It was a struggle for her. I respect her decision. I honor her pain. Like all of us, she has the right to express herself. I could just imagine how hard it must have been for her to do the interview.”

Abunda admitted he didn’t want to do the interview himself. “It was one of the most difficult I’ve had. It was hard because I knew how devastated KC was. She’s in so much pain. During the interview, the flow of tears just wouldn’t stop.”

Abunda likened the experience to a “roller coaster ride. She smiled, then wept, then laughed.”

He said the pretaped interview was conducted in one of the studios inside ABS-CBN shortly before KC left for Japan, ironically, to perform in a show with Piolo and other Kapamilya talents.

“It was very quiet on the set. The atmosphere wasn’t tense, but there was a nervous air. Nobody knew what was going to happen. I felt jittery myself. I didn’t know where to start.”

The TV host also said: “Prior to the interview, the writers [of the show] had asked KC if she wanted to read our prepared questions. She said no. She spoke what was in her heart, but made sure not to destroy other people’s lives. She was very careful.”

He said this was why KC had paused so often before replying. “She was struggling to say the right words, cognizant of the repercussion. In the middle of her anger and pain, there was prudence. I was impressed by that.”

Abunda said he was aware of the mixed reactions of people to KC’s revelations. “Some people liked it, some didn’t. I understand KC—you do certain things to cope with pain,” he pointed out. “Pain is pain, we all understand that.”
