More than a decade after she played the iconic female heroine Darna, Kapamilya (ABS-CBN) actress Angel Locsin has been chosen to reprise the role.

After much deliberation as to who will act as the remarkable Pinay hero in the big screen and after considering different actresses, all fit in their own way to play Darna, Star Cinema head Malou Santos ended all speculations. She announced that the role belonged to Angel Locsin, one of the most remarkable actresses who ever played Mars Ravelo’s protagonist.

Last year, the actress declined being considered for the role due to bulging disc she had been diagnosed with, resulting from the stunts she herself had performed in her previous projects.

Among the names considered to be the new Darna was Jessy Mendiola, who was named the sexiest woman this year by men’s magazine FHM. She had been linked to Locsin’s ex-boyfriend Luis Manzano and accused of being the reason for the breakup.

Darna is an iconic Filipina fictional hero created by the famous Filipino graphic novelist that was thrust into Filipino consciousness upon its release in comic book in the early 1950s. She is famous for her incredible strength, speed and invulnerability.

Throughout the decades, different actresses have played the iconic role including Kapuso Primetime Queen Marian Rivera in 2009, former beauty queen Anjanette Abayari in 1994, former actress Nanette Medved in 1991, veteran actress Rio Locsin in 1979,comedy king Dolphy in 1979 (in a comedic version), Lorna Tolentino in 1977, Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos in 1973, award-winning actress Gina Pareno in 1969, former actresses Eva Montes and Liza Moreno in 1965.

The first ever actress to portray the role of the iconic heroine is celebrated pre-war actress and original Queen of Filipino Movies Rosa del Rosario in 1953.
