Julianna’s ‘liberation’
HOW DO we face death? The story of a 6-year-old child can teach us how to face death with courage and wisdom:
Julianna Snow was only 2-years-old when she was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease. While other kids were playing at age 4, Julianna had to accept that she could no longer use her arms and legs.
Even her facial muscles for swallowing had deteriorated, so she was given nutrients through a tube in her stomach. She was rushed to the hospital many times because of breathing difficulties.
Her mother Michelle is a neurologist and her father is an Air Force pilot. Julianna’s condition was a difficult challenge for them to deal with, but it strengthened the couple’s faith and courage—especially after doctors had warned them about the possibility of death. Even if Julianna’s life could be prolonged, she’d be unable to interact with other people.
The situation prompted the mother to share their intimate conversation in her blog:
Michelle (M): If you get sick again, do you want to stay home or go to the hospital again?
Julianna (J): Not the hospital.
M: Even if that means you’ll go to heaven if you stay home?
J: Yes.
M: You know that mommy and daddy won’t come with you right away? You’ll go by yourself first.
J: Don’t worry. God will take care of me.
M: If you go to the hospital, it may help you get better and spend more time with us…
J: I understand.
M: (Crying) I’m sorry. I know you don’t like it when I cry. It’s just that I will miss you so much.
J: That’s OK. God will take care of me. He’s in my heart.
The little girl’s brave decision to place her life in the hands of God inspired many people. Earlier this month, Julianna left her sick body behind and went with her Best Friend—a happy, liberated soul!
