Theater artists crossing over

“IT’S THRILLING,” Nar Cabico said, that theater actors like him are getting more opportunities these days to work in film and TV, which give them mainstream recognition and allow them to share their talents with a bigger audience.
“The line separating those worlds has been blurred. Theater artists are crossing over, while some stars who started on TV or in the movies have started to take an interest in theater,” he told the Inquirer in a recent interview.
Nar, who was part of the 2015 GMA 7 drama series “Beautiful Strangers,” is a graduate of the Philippine High School for the Arts, and has been performing in theater for the past 10 years, including “Zsazsa Zaturnnah Ze Muzikal.”
What Nar considers his biggest break, however, was “Kung Paano Ako Naging Lady,” which ended up opening doors to a career in TV. “I was seen by GMA 7 executives during a performance. They found me funny,” he recalled.
He related that he and one of his best friends, Jerald Napoles (of “Rak of Aegis” fame) are still in disbelief at how their careers have turned out. The actor, who’s also in the cast of a stage musical, “3 Stars and a Sun,” said it’s heartening when people appreciate the things theater artists put on the table—good acting, a knack for improvisation and impeccable work ethic.
Nar added that dabbling in other fields of performing has helped him become well-rounded. He has also recorded a song with Betong Sumaya, titled “Sumayaw, Igalaw” for “One Heart”—an all-star charity album that also features tracks from Glaiza de Castro, Derrick Monasterio, Ruru Madrid, Kylie Padilla, Gabbi Garcia, Maricris Garcia and Julian Trono.
