Priscilla reveals secret behind ‘taming’ John

Priscilla Meirelles-Estrada is Brazilian by birth, but Filipino at heart. So, that makes her a certified “BrazNay.” She has embraced everything Filipino, including local teleseryes. Pri (her nickname) is all revved up to try acting. The former beauty queen makes her acting debut in ABS-CBN’s “Be My Lady” (airs Monday to Friday, before “It’s Showtime”).
Top-billed by Brazilian model-actor Daniel Matsunaga and Kapamilya star Erich Gonzales, the soap delves into the intricacies of an interracial relationship. That’s something Pri can relate to since she’s married to Filipino actor John Estrada.
To spice up Pri’s foray into show biz, she will be working with John’s ex-wife, Janice de Belen. Knowing Janice (who’s my kumare, since she is the godmother of my daughter), she is a seasoned actress who will take everything in stride. And Pri is one gracious lady, so she will play it cool, too.
Do you and Janice feel awkward working together?
I can only speak for myself. On my first day, I felt awkward, but it had nothing to do with Ms Janice.
It was my first time to act in a soap opera, so I had no idea what to do. I tried to observe and go with the flow. And since all my scenes for the first week were with Ms Janice, I watched her the most. I tried my best not to disappoint everyone.
How does John (Estrada) feel that you’re working with his ex?
At first, he asked me: “Are you sure?” I quipped: “Yes … She is not my ex, so why not?” We both laughed.
How’s your relationship with John and Janice’s children?
Very healthy and genuine. I love the kids, and I know in my heart they love me, too. They call me Ate Pri, and I love that, because Ate is used to address an older sister as a sign of respect and affection.
We eat out or in the house. We spend important occasions together, like Christmas. We travel. We joke, we talk, we have a good time when they’re around.
They are very sweet to my baby, Anechka, and for that, I love them even more!
What’s one question you’ve been wanting to ask Janice?
I swear it never crossed my mind to ask her anything. Maybe it would be about acting. I would ask her what sets her apart from other actors today.
What acting tip did John give you?
Don’t try to act. Just be yourself—be natural and you’ll be fine! But then, in my mind, I was wondering: How do I do that?
How do you and John resolve arguments?
We talk about it—on the spot or the next day. Nothing goes unresolved.
How did you “tame” John?
Who am I to tame anyone? Prayers can move mountains—that’s my secret! I pray for my husband. So, if John has been “tamed,” that’s God’s work! I am just an instrument of the Lord.
What’s your advice to interracial couples like you and John?
Patience and understanding are crucial. They need to understand that the differences that attracted them to each other may also break them apart if they don’t learn how to accept and adjust! But love conquers all. Most importantly, put God in the center of the relationship.
What unsolicited advice will you give Erich and Daniel?
Oh, my… If there’s something I’ve learned growing up in Brazil, it is to never give unsolicited advice to anyone!
In what way have you become Filipino?
I love Filipino food. I speak Taglish. I have a Filipino heart, Filipino husband, Filipino discipline in driving—and Filipino humor!
