We made it a point to visit the final shooting day of “My Bebe Love” at One Esplanade last Monday, Nov. 30. During the dinner break, direk Joey Reyes was cracking jokes and creating a light mood on the set.

How is Maine Mendoza as a film actress? Joey shares, “Maine is a natural! We were worried that there was no time for her to take a workshop. But, I’m not a firm believer in workshops—I’ve seen actors take workshops for 10 years, and they’re still bad! She’s a natural comedian, which is close to who she really is. The phenomenal love team of “AlDub” (Mendoza and Alden Richards) has been creating social media frenzy worldwide and has shattered national TV ratings. Can this reel, split-screen love team become a real couple? “They’re very good friends. The thing is, they have chemistry, which some other love teams—regardless of marketing—cannot achieve.

“They’re just two kids who are enjoying themselves on the set, and seizing the opportunities given to them. What you see is what you get. With Maine, wala s’yang pagka-show biz. She doesn’t even know what she’s gotten herself into,” laughs the 61-year-old director.

He adds, “What’s important is, they get along. Alden shows concern for her.

“Grabe ang schedule nila! Maine says that she usually wakes up at 6 a.m. to prepare for ‘Eat Bulaga’—and she gets home at 3 a.m.! She only gets to sleep while she’s in the car during transit.

“It’s the same with Alden, who has weak lungs. So, pinapagalitan s’ya ni Maine, because he needs to take better care of his health! They talk like good friends—that’s a great start!”

Does the prolific director feel any pressure for “My Bebe Love” to do well at the box office? He muses, “If I allowed pressure to get to me, I would have sleepless nights! People are placing bets for the movie to be No. 1. But, what’s more important is for me to fulfill people’s expectations for Alden and Maine, as well as for Vic Sotto and AiAi de las Alas. The box office is just icing on the cake!”

Will Alden and Yaya Dub figure in a kissing scene? Joey pauses, then laughs hard: “Panoorin nila! There’s a surprise!”
