AGONCILLO. “The social media’s cloak of anonymity brings out the dark side of some netizens.”

We recently asked Ryan Agoncillo what he thought of social media—do its advantages outweigh its disadvantages? Ryan told us, “I’m a late-bloomer. Before I put up my Instagram account, I thought about it for a full week. I told myself that I should be able to enjoy what it has to offer. I treat it as a gallery of my life!

“People who follow me notice that I rarely put anything related to work—they’re almost always posts involving my family and friends. I’m careful, because it isn’t strictly for public consumption. I am its first ‘audience.’ What I do is so public na kasi, so my social media page has to cater to my needs first—but it’s open to my loved ones, too.

“Kaya naka-private ang account ko, but not because nobody else outside my circle is allowed access to it. But, you have to click and want to follow me, para lang you know what you’re getting yourself into. —It isn’t random. It’s like, pinapasok kita sa bahay ko, kasi kumatok ka, not because my home is open to everybody.

“If there are bashers, I answer back if it involves my wife, kids and friends. But, I choose my battles, kasi hindi mo puwedeng patulan lahat.

“To make things simpler and easier, just block them—because manners are still important. Anonymity has made it the devil’s playground—because the social media’s cloak of anonymity brings out the dark side of some netizens!”
