BEST known for her role as Hermione Granger in the “Harry Potter” franchise, Emma Watson tackles a dark, disturbed character, a child abuse victim, in Alejandro Amenabar’s psychological thriller “Regression.”

“She grew up in a house with two addicts—her father and grandmother are alcoholics,” Watson described her character Angela Gray. “Her mother died in a car accident when she was young. The huge level of neglect in her life… informs her choices and how she sees the world.”

Amenabar said Watson was perfect for the part: “Emma is an extremely intelligent woman. She understood the project completely. ‘Regression’ is not a horror movie. It’s about fear and the fragility of the human mind.”

“Regression,” from Pioneer Films, opens on Oct. 14.
