ANGELICA Panganiban and JM de Guzman in Sagada, a poignant scene from “That Thing Called Tadhana”

The first time I met JM de Guzman at his place—for TV5’s old show, “Paparazzi”—he was spaced out. He seemed lost. So I was pleasantly surprised to see he had gotten his groove back in “That Thing Called Tadhana,” now a certified hit movie.

After being sidetracked by many controversies, JM is so back! All of us at the Cinema Evaluation Board were impressed by his endearing portrayal as Angelica Panganiban’s leading man. Their tandem works in every scene. Nothing feels contrived or overdone.

It’s good that JM has gotten his act together. A talent like his would be a terrible thing to waste.

FEATURED STORIES

Here’s “That Cutie Called JM”:

Based on the movie, do you believe in leaving love up to fate or will you fight for it?

If both of you adore each other, then it’s worth fighting for. Otherwise, just set each other free.

Why do you think you have great chemistry with Angelica onscreen?

Because we both enjoyed shooting the movie. Our director (Antoinette Jadaone) had complete trust in us and we trusted her in return. Angelica is so charming and her beauty is so [natural]. Any guy would surely be as giddy as I was.

What did your hiatus from show biz teach you?

That family comes first. They are the only ones who will never leave my side, no matter what.

What’s the most important love lesson you’ve learned?

To love myself first and, even when I love someone, to leave some love for me, too.

How did drug abuse, and then rehab, change you?

[Recovery] brought me closer to God and led me to my purpose. It made me love life, my family and my career more. It taught me self-respect and also to respect others. It made me realize the importance of the people who love me. It made me stronger. No matter how tough a problem is, I should take it like a man.

What turns you on?

Cuddling and gentle kisses.

What turns you off?

Plastic people.

What do you think of gay people?

I’ve had many gay friends and idols since my theater days. They are passionate and talented. They are fun to have around. I am not homophobic at all. I have many gay friends since my theater days.

How do you handle girls and gays who are too forward?

I just have to appreciate their attention.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for love?

I serenaded a girl on national TV.

What do you look for in a girl?

Sincerity, sweetness, simplicity. I want someone I can take anywhere, who’s interesting to talk to, and who likes to laugh.

What’s the naughtiest thing you’ve done?

Censored! (Laughs)

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I listen to solfeggio tones, binaural beats and meditate in the dark.

Now that you’re back, what are your career goals?

To save enough to build my dream house and start a business.

Please share a cute anecdote with Angelica while shooting?

While we were in Baguio, we both craved Twister Fries… which we dipped in gravy.

What makes you sad?

Sad songs, movies, memories.

What makes you angry?

Whatever will harm my family.

What makes you smile?

Waking up.

What do you promise yourself this time around?

To never let myself and family down again.
