American Idol Season 7 finalist dies

MANILA, Philippines – Michael Johns, a finalist of the American Idol Season 7, died last Friday, media reports said Sunday.

He was 35.

Fox network and his family released statements Saturday confirming the Australian-born singer’s death.

“Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle and friend,” the family said in a statement Saturday.

“We appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from all corners of the globe. Please keep Michael in your thoughts and respect our need to grieve privately in this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, Idol, Fox and two series producers, Fremantle Media North America and 19 Entertainment, issued a statement describing Michael Johns “an incredible talent.”

“We are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was a part of our American Idol family and he will be truly missed,” the network said. With a report from Associated Press
