Mommies know best

/ 01:57 AM May 07, 2014

Since Mother’s Day is just around the corner, I asked some celebs for the best pieces of advice their moms gave them, and which one they wished they heeded but didn’t.

I could write a book on the words of wisdom my late great mom left me. I would entitle it “Inday Badidayisms.”

Many people took advantage of my mom’s kindness and generosity. I asked her once, “Why do you continue helping people who duped you?”

She told me her assistance didn’t go to waste for as long as she got to help those people’s families.

I plead guilty of turning a deaf ear to much of her counsel; blame it on my restless nature in my younger years.

For instance, her constant reminder to take note of how a guy treated his mom, because that was how he would treat me. I’d have dodged a lot of heartaches, had I listened.

Although I miss my mom daily, I can’t help smiling at the thought that since, in heaven, she’s no longer busy being Inday Badiday, she can now focus on watching over me and my siblings.

Here’s to you, Ma … I’m all ears and all yours.

Mom has given me so much advice that I could close my eyes to pick and choose. Unfortunately, that is another one of her instructions: “Don’t close your eyes when you pick and choose.” But her very best advice was to let go and lift up all my problems and worries to Jesus. She said, “Let God be God.”

And what’s her advice that I wish I had followed but didn’t? “Don’t have that second serving.” Hahaha!

AIKO Melendez says she did many things her way.

My mom told me to seek God first and put him above everything, and he will give you, or lead you to, the desires of your heart. I did many things my way without God’s guidance. That’s why some of my major decisions didn’t turn out well.

Joey Generoso

JOEY Generoso’ s mom inspired him to excel.

My mom always told me to follow my dream and do my best and be the best in whatever makes me happy. She dreamed of a college degree for me, but my calling to join bands became a hindrance to formal education. She also wanted me to be a classical pianist, which did not happen.

I was closest to my mom, being the youngest of 10 siblings. Wherever she is now, I am confident she is proud of what I have achieved, even if I didn’t heed her advice to graduate. I am forever grateful to my mom for her encouragement and support.

Grace Lee

The best advice my mom gave me is to always be humble and entrust everything in life to the Lord. She said we achieve success only through God’s greatness and grace. She also advised me to especially guard my heart. Looking back, knowing what I know now, I wish I had listened and tried harder.

Early in life, my mom prepared me for the future. She always reminded me that when the time came, I should be a good provider for my family. That’s what I’m doing now. I just wish that I also followed her advice to finish my studies. Show biz got in the way.

Ara Mina

ARA MINA has learned the power of prayer.

She gave me old-school advice, like not to sleep when my hair is wet and not to take a bath when I have my monthly period. Mom was into pamahiin. But she also instilled in me the power of prayer.

I wish I had listened to her advice about business. She told me not to put up a business if I didn’t have time to oversee it. True enough, my casting agency folded up and my restaurant closed after just a few years.
