Alfonso Cuaron wins Oscar for best director

LOS ANGELES – Alfonso Cuaron has won the Academy Award for best director for the visually groundbreaking lost-in-space spectacle “Gravity.”

It was the seventh Oscar of the evening for “Gravity” and the second for Cuaron himself. Earlier in the evening he shared in the Oscar for film editing.

The Mexican director, 52, has been lauded for the technical advancements featured in his film, which was seen as revitalizing the 3-D format.

The other nominees Sunday were: David O. Russell, “American Hustle”; Alexander Payne, “Nebraska”; Steve McQueen, “12 Years a Slave”; and Martin Scorsese, “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

The 86th Academy Awards are airing live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with host Ellen DeGeneres.
